What is HTML?

HTML (Hypertext Markup Language) is a markup language used to create web pages. Along with CSS and JavaScript, HTML is a fundamental technology, used to create visually engaging, dynamic web pages and user interfaces for web applications. Do not make mistake, HTML is not a programming language, it's a markup language.

A markup language is a set of markup tags, which describe structure and content of web page. HTML describes page with HTML tags (elements), each HTML tag describes different document content. HTML tags might have attributes - a modifier of an HTML element. An attribute either modifies the default functionality of an element or provides functionality to certain elements unable to function correctly without them.

There are different HTML document types on the web. To display a document correctly, the browser must know both type and version. Still commonly used but out-of-date types are HTML 4.01 and XHTML. Modern specification of HTML document type is HTML5.
